Social justice is about developing a society founded on the principles of human rights and equality.
As our society evolves, our culture is moving more and more towards one where social justice is the accepted 'norm'. Equal rights in terms of pay, job opportunities, access to health care, the right to marry, etc. are now part of the constitution in most countries around the world, though there is a great deal still to be done in ensuring that these rights are applied.
The term 'social justice' was first coined by Luigi Taparelli in 1840, arising from the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. It was popularised in 1848 by Antonio Rosmini-Serbati.
Social Justice includes such concepts as:
- Minimal wage
- Equal pay for men and women and those of different nationalities
- The right for gays and lesbians to marry
- The right to a health care
- The right to a quality of life with dignity regardless of nationality, sexuality or disability
There are many proponents of Social Justice, from President Obama to Neale Donald Walsh. Please browse the rest of the website for more information on Social Justice.
